The Great Ocean Road Woollen Mill is located on a 20-acre property near Timboon, a small rural town in Western Victoria. Situated north of Port Campbell and the Great Ocean Road, Timboon is mostly known for its dairy industry, although there is a scattering of artisan-style businesses offering gourmet produce – as well as the more recent addition of the boutique Great Ocean Road Woollen Mill.
The mill is fully owned and operated by husband and wife team Nick and Isabel, who farm alpacas on their 20-acre property in addition to operating the mill. It was established in 2015 so Nick and Isabel could make productive use of the fibre from their growing herd of alpacas.
Both Nick and Isabel are passionate about Australian-made products that are both ethical and sustainable. They also believe in competitive and realistic pricing for their unique range of yarns and garments to allow everyone to enjoy these beautiful products.
The Great Ocean Road Woollen Mill is the only spinning mill in Australia certified by Ethical Clothing Australia. It also holds a licence for Australian Made and Grown. All products including yarn and garments are made onsite at the mill from Australian merino and alpaca wool.
The majority of fibre processed at the mill is sourced from within a 100-kilometre radius. This ensures all yarn and garments produced are fully traceable and that the mill has a low carbon footprint. In addition, natural fibres are a fully renewable resource, as animals grow fleece each year. The mill also supports farmers and sheep graziers in Western Victoria, offering them the opportunity to sell their produce locally.
No artificial fibres are used at the mill. Nick and Isabel focus on small-batch creations for both their lovely yarns and stylish knitwear. The natural colours and textures emphasize the softness and uniqueness of the high-quality, superfine fleece used to create them.
The mill and farm do not have access to a town water supply and use rainwater for washing the wool and yarn. Recycled rainwater from this process is used to water the farm’s organic orchard. All wool is scoured in Geelong in strict adherence to Australian Standards. In addition, both the farm and mill are 95% operated using solar power for electricity in line with Nick and Isabel’s passion for local and sustainable products.
